As I was thinking about all this, I went on a bit of a journey.

I wanted to see if there was something that tied all these classic sales pages together – something I could take and use for myself.
Sadly, my initial findings were confusing and disappointing.
Every ad was completely different!
Some – like the ads of John Caples, David Ogilvy, and Jay Abraham were serious and businesslike.
Others – like those of Gary Halbert and John Carlton were more informal and amusing. Two buddies joking around the bar.
Some told long elaborate stories, some none. Some introduced the creator of the product, some didn't. Some hit you with a problem, some talked about the results.
Some went straight in for the sale, some went around the houses. Some had dozens of testimonials, some none. Some short, some long. Some had loads of bullets, a guarantee... you get the point.
They all seemed completely different.
I was ready to give up when the answer smacked me across the forehead.
These sales page do share one thing in common.
That thing – The Premise.
Essentially The Premise is...
For example, one of the 45 letters is written by Agora, and starts with the headline:
'Five Hidden Dangers of Your Morning Shower':
The product is a shower filter.
What's 'The Premise' – the thing the reader has to believe – before they are willing to buy the shower filter?
Well, they have to believe that there are various nasties in their shower water in the first place!
And that's exactly what this sales page does – it starts by making you wonder 'what hidden dangers are in my shower'?
Only when you believe that your shower water is dangerous will you think about buying a water filter.
So I realized that although the 45 sales pages SEEMED completely different, it turns out they were all trying to prove something to the reader before they could make the sale.
But HOW they proved that something depended on the audience and the product being sold.
In fact...
The type of sales page they chose made all the difference.
‘Hidden Dangers’ is one of the 13 types - used above in our shower filter example.
This is perfect when your audience faces problems they don’t even know exist. you show them effectively there’s a train crash ahead and they need to get out of the way - fast.
But - and this is where everyone else goes wrong - you can’t use this for every product in every market.
You have to know which of the 13 sales pages fits best with your particular product and audience.
Picking the correct one of the 13 is a crucial part of whether you’ll have an incredible Automatic Salesman or a dud.
It’s a question of ‘horses for courses’.
If you choose the wrong one, you might be dead in the water before you start.
This is what annoys me about all the other methods and systems - they are effectively ‘when all you have is a hammer, everything is a nail’.
